In the german newspaper "Sueddeutsche Zeitung" was today article about a successfully treatment with stemcells from skin for a 80 year old japanese woman with a (not specified) eye disease which could lead to blindness. According to the article, this was published in the NEJM ( www.nejm.org ).

In the same publication was mentioned that 3 patients in Florida got blind after a stem cell treatment which cells gained from fat tissue. While Cytori is not mentioned at all and it is more generally pointed to some obscure doctors/clinics.

Do we know anything about that?

The good part of the story was out of Japan using Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells. The tragic story of three blinded patients comes from US Stem Cell (formerly Bioheart) using adipose derived SVF cells. They should never have been experimenting with patient's eyes. Disgusting.

Did Bioheart do this outside of FDA monitoring?

They did not have an IND or IDE from the FDA. Just running a stem cell clinic like the many out there. These illegal clinics in the U.S. are probably the main reason Okyanos has struggled. www.cbsnews.com/news/stem-cell-treatment-blinded-three-women-florida/

Thanks for the clarification, a tragedy overall. Wondering how this could be possible in such a regulated environment.
